Tiny book

I made a tiny tiny concertina book based on my "How to Digest A Thought" animation from last year. Totally sold two of them at our exhibition. Numfar, do the Dance of Joy!

Motion test 1

Some motion tests for a 2 day animation workshop at school. Some weird wonky stuff going on there, but how about them ears? Coolest cat in the club with that party trick.

Summer project: sequential interpretation of audio/word

Summer project done, on to new briefs! Here's my animated interpretation of Sylvia Plath's "Daddy" (HD, if you please).

I animated this with a photoshop/stopmotion technique. Creating scenes with individual moving bits in layers and manipulating each bit before saving frame by frame.

Movement stopmotion

Dreaming about something isn't always wanting, and some people just like to watch.

Our last brief for level 4 was to write our own brief and make a personal project. I managed to ramble about Sherlock Holmes and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula for half a page before finally getting to the bottom line: I love fiction. I want to create fiction. Worlds, characters, background props that only other weirdos will notice and appreciate. I want these things, but I don't do them. Why?

Ingen som vet, ingen som vet.

The brief was about giving myself a kick in the bum and get to work, to not care about anything else but getting an idea, sticking to it and making it happen. To not at any point surrender to the nagging suspicions or dreary doubts. I made a stopmotion film, here it is (HD recommended):

And here's a wee making of thing:

Art of the accident II

Oh, and in the absolute elation following the purchase of my shiny new Canon a4 inkjet I made a really quick book with material from my Art of the Accident brief. This is it:

Semiotics: visual poem

Oh my giddy aunt, I've been working on this big ol' brief for a while now. Going to New York (yes, in March) I saw this poem on the metro:

I remember my mother toward the end,
folding the tablecloth after dinner
               so carefully,
as if it were the flag
of a country that no longer existed,
but once had ruled the world.

Coming back and setting out to work on interpreting this poem with semiotics, nazis attacked and stabbed some feminists in my home town and all hell broke lose in my insides. Still informed by Jim Moore's poem, my project geared towards more personal, political territory.

Fold-a-flag is about the flag as a symbol and how the way one reads a flag can be distorted or shifted over as little time as a decade. How a society can decide to turn against a group of people, against reason and compassion, lured by the idea of "our" well-being as being separate from "theirs".

It's a realistically useless design project meant to bring personal inner calm (to me, and to you too if you want) and make you think about what you could do practically to change our society to the better. Voting in the EU-elections would have been a good start. Not voting for joke politicians would have been another.

V&A archive

After a visit to the Victoria & Albert museum in London (fantastic place, highly recommended) we were briefed to curate a 5 piece exhibition from the online archive. The following is my tiny fake V&A exhibition booklet with 5 works connected by the word "lost".

Brief: Home/House

It's a book! It's a suitcase! It's a town! It's a video! It's not quite Superman, but it's interactive and it's got Bob Dylan lyrics, kinda like a musical kinder egg.

Here's a video display:

NYC photos

I was on a study trip to NYC last week, visiting studios, graphic designers, photographers and animators. We met some really lovely people, like Buck TV2x4Dexter SinisterHilary Greenbaum and Jeff Mermelstein. And then also did a lot of running around and eating.

Took some photos with my fantastic Nikkormat (heirloom. Loom of heir. Loom!) and these are the scanned negatives. They came out all sepia, I'll be working with them in the lab at a later time and I'm sure they'll come out very differently then. Colour negs to come, when I've found someone to process them.

The art of accident

Our latest brief has been about accidents and experiments. I did a series of collages that eventually inspired me to make a short stop-motion film. Planning as little as possible, I lit the set with dim moving lights and did every scene as they came, leaving everything open for whim and accident.

Look what I have found

Brief: Look what I have found. Essentially: find something, do something with it. I found a notebook from 1946-8 with some sports-related notes in, and I created a dossier around it and a time-travel theory.

World meets world

When worlds collide.
Brief: find two worlds, examine, mix, compare, squish. Have fun. What happens?

GIF ME MORE

The brief:
Make six one-minute gifs on the following themes:

1/ a portrait showing your biggest hero
2/ the best building in the world
3/ the best book you have ever read
4/ favourite travel destination
5/ the best song ever
6/ something that makes you really angry

In order:

Sherlock Holmes // Howl's Moving Castle // Good Omens (the M25 is the sigil of Odegra in the language of the Black Priesthood of Ancient Mu and means 'Hail the Great Beast, Devourer of Worlds')// The Past // Queen Jane Approximately // people who aren't aware of where they're standing/going/doing annoy me, sometimes (I suffer from road rage, even as a pedestrian)

Metaphysics and .gif

Developed some old friends today at our darkroom induction. I can't wait until I can bring my cameras over after the holidays, much time will be spent in the dark with the dim lights and potent smells then. It's a lovely big ol' room with nooks and corridors and MACHINERY. Par example: they've got a machine that eats your photopaper whole and spits out an image moments later; developed, stopped, fixed and dried. I know part of the fun is acting wave-machine for the wee photos in their bathtubs, appreciate, but technology is also fantastic. (This is how I get around printers too, when printing 50+ A2 images from an inkjet you have loads of time to stare at said printer and think "how is this possible?", had I lived in lesser developed times and a time-traveller had, perplexingly, showed me the magic of printing, I too would have believed in God, mistakingly.)

THIS IS A NIGHT OF GIF, EXPECT TO BE UPDATED.
(It's actually Friday. Illusion: shattered!)
