Some motion tests for a 2 day animation workshop at school. Some weird wonky stuff going on there, but how about them ears? Coolest cat in the club with that party trick.

Summer project: sequential interpretation of audio/word

Summer project done, on to new briefs! Here's my animated interpretation of Sylvia Plath's "Daddy" (HD, if you please).

I animated this with a photoshop/stopmotion technique. Creating scenes with individual moving bits in layers and manipulating each bit before saving frame by frame.

Dreaming about something isn't always wanting, and some people just like to watch.

Our last brief for level 4 was to write our own brief and make a personal project. I managed to ramble about Sherlock Holmes and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula for half a page before finally getting to the bottom line: I love fiction. I want to create fiction. Worlds, characters, background props that only other weirdos will notice and appreciate. I want these things, but I don't do them. Why?

The brief was about giving myself a kick in the bum and get to work, to not care about anything else but getting an idea, sticking to it and making it happen. To not at any point surrender to the nagging suspicions or dreary doubts. I made a stopmotion film, here it is (HD recommended):

The art of accident

Our latest brief has been about accidents and experiments. I did a series of collages that eventually inspired me to make a short stop-motion film. Planning as little as possible, I lit the set with dim moving lights and did every scene as they came, leaving everything open for whim and accident.

Brief: Explain in a sequence... how to digest a thought

Okidoki, so here's the short film I finished last night, in .gif form (probably the best file extension in the world). I have every intention of making this into a proper animation with a start and an end and bits between, and lovely sounds and possibly a whacky indian tune about a typewriter towards the end (might feel differently about that come morn). Though this will have to wait until I have time to wrap my head around iMove, or somesuch film-enabling soft device.

I've had a really good week and for the first time I feel 100% content with being here and doing this. It's a fantastic opportunity and a privilege to image-make full time. I will do my very best to remember this, always.

The UK adventures - setbacks

So, this just happened.

A little unsettling. First I got an email from UCAS telling me to log in and check out some change that had happened, and once there I discovered a tiny "unsuccessful" next to Edinburgh. Perhaps half an hour later I get an email from ED telling me to sign in on their site and check out something something that has happened. My grades don't meet their qualifications. Which makes me think that I didn't get in because I couldn't report my grades in any sort of sane way on UCAS when I applied. I've sent them an email, hope it helps but probably not.

Here's some good news for balance (if good and bad news that only really affect me puts you off balance in any way): GSA called for interview! Scotland's still in the game, I'm now hoping to go there and absolutely love it. Oh, and get in.
