Tiny book

I made a tiny tiny concertina book based on my "How to Digest A Thought" animation from last year. Totally sold two of them at our exhibition. Numfar, do the Dance of Joy!

Art of the accident II

Oh, and in the absolute elation following the purchase of my shiny new Canon a4 inkjet I made a really quick book with material from my Art of the Accident brief. This is it:

Semiotics: visual poem

Oh my giddy aunt, I've been working on this big ol' brief for a while now. Going to New York (yes, in March) I saw this poem on the metro:

I remember my mother toward the end,
folding the tablecloth after dinner
               so carefully,
as if it were the flag
of a country that no longer existed,
but once had ruled the world.

Coming back and setting out to work on interpreting this poem with semiotics, nazis attacked and stabbed some feminists in my home town and all hell broke lose in my insides. Still informed by Jim Moore's poem, my project geared towards more personal, political territory.

Fold-a-flag is about the flag as a symbol and how the way one reads a flag can be distorted or shifted over as little time as a decade. How a society can decide to turn against a group of people, against reason and compassion, lured by the idea of "our" well-being as being separate from "theirs".

It's a realistically useless design project meant to bring personal inner calm (to me, and to you too if you want) and make you think about what you could do practically to change our society to the better. Voting in the EU-elections would have been a good start. Not voting for joke politicians would have been another.

V&A archive

After a visit to the Victoria & Albert museum in London (fantastic place, highly recommended) we were briefed to curate a 5 piece exhibition from the online archive. The following is my tiny fake V&A exhibition booklet with 5 works connected by the word "lost".

Brief: Home/House

It's a book! It's a suitcase! It's a town! It's a video! It's not quite Superman, but it's interactive and it's got Bob Dylan lyrics, kinda like a musical kinder egg.

Here's a video display:

Book arts UoB

Finally had our induction to book arts today, glorious fun! Now all that's wanting is a nice screen induction and we're back in business.

Here's a well executed concertina and a sewn, glued and properly covered and cut sketchbook:

365: book 1

Sketchbook. I've started a "one a day" project, drawing something every day. (Edit: I managed about 15 days before giving up completely, one day I will do this!)

Book gif

A book with some prints of old drawings. I wanted to try out an idea I had to make sort of relief characters on the cover, in this case with my shiny fake marble.

Book no 2

Ahoyhoy a second book! I made this in order to learn the right, non-messy way of finishing a book. So I took the opportunity to go nuts with my new fake woodpanneling and GOLD.

Book no 1

Today we've been making concertina books in class, and we were asked to bring a picture, word or idea to base the book on. I printed out the tuition fee rules and guidelines from ECA and used that along with a wonderful old school book with maps and info on countries to make a tiny book on the subject of 'home'. Applying to things make me feel lost, I guess.

I got ahead of myself and made the cover on my own after class, but I knew exactly what I was doing and all of it was minutely planned and totally intentional. It was a mess, but a spectacular mess. I like making books.

Making books, lesson one

The graphics department has a guest teacher this December, Eva, who used to teach class at the GSA. She's teaching us about artists' books and it's all kinds of fantastic.

We've only folded some variations of concertina books and started some basic sewing, but the production's already at full steam. Here are the notebooks I made this afternoon.

This inspires me to get on with my project, and to apply to every school I can find in the UK. I'd forgotten that I'd really really like to go.
